What is Skype and Why Should You Care?

What is Skype?

According to the Skype FAQ:

Skype is a free program that uses the latest P2P (cutting edge p2p technology) technology to bring affordable and high-quality voice communications to people all over the world.

A simpler and more exact definition would be:

Skype is an Internet telephony or Voice-over-IP (VoIP) service provider that offers free calling between computers and low-cost calling to regular telephones that aren’t connected to the Internet

How does it work?

When you use software downloaded from Skype, you can connect to other Skype users so that you can talk and chat.  Similar to Yahoo/MSN Messenger.

Behind the software however, is a different matter:

A Step Back

Well that didn’t last very long at all haha! The problem with the K2 theme was that it looks too much like a blog and I’m trying to move away from that. The K2 theme (which is still in beta) is feature-rich since it was developed specially for Wordpress 2.0. However, I have gone back to a pre-2.0 theme for now as I think it suits my purpose better.

I also appear to be struggling with content at the moment. You may notice that my first few entries on eJoneclicks.com was very mundane and trivial. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to share and posted some entries on latest happenings in the world of technology and Internet.

What Is Broadband Capping?

BroadbandImagine subscribing to Sky or a similar Cable TV provider. Imagine paying a montly flat fee for those extra channels you wanted. Imagine then, having only been given a limited number of hours for watching those channels per month. Once you’ve reached the limit, your provider will start charging you extra on an hourly rate. You have the choice of turning off you television set, or cough up the money when you get the bill at the end of the month. This analogy is exactly similar to “broadband capping”.If you haven’t got broadband at home yet, chances are, you will do very very soon. Prices have come down a lot since it was first introduced a few years ago. Fortunately, speeds have gone up and up and up. You’ve had a taste for the speed at work or at a friend’s place. So you start looking at prices and special deals by Internet Service Providers, more often than enough, that’s when you get caught.

Spyware: An Often Ignored Threat

SpywareAre you getting sleazy popup ads that refuse to go away even when your web browser is closed? Found some new icons or shortcuts on your desktop? Web browser keeps loading the same page over and over again even when you have set your default start page? Finding your PC slowing down all of a sudden, even when you have no programs running?

Congratulations! Your PC is infected with Spyware or even worse, SpywareS (yes you can have more than one at a time). But what IS Spyware and why is it called that? Well because in technical terms, that’s what it does. It is a program that uses a live internet connection to pass information between your computer and an internet ad-server. The server sends advertisements to your computer, and according to these companies, your computer collects information about which ads you’ve seen and which ads you’ve clicked and then sends that to the server. This is all done in the background, without you interacting with the program in anyway.
